With close to 30 years experience working as a designer in the advertising industry, I have seen my share of stress. With demanding clients and unrealistic deadlines, anxiety and panic were a part of my everyday reality. My first method of self-care came from a bottle. Alcohol, while not the healthiest of options, was certainly one of the quickest. For many years, I found solace in drinking. My days were filled with high anxiety and my nights with self-medicating escapism.
I consider myself very fortunate to have realized that something needed to change BEFORE I destroyed my health. I knew this lifestyle wouldn’t have a happy ending, so I began my search for something more sustainable.
In the late 90’s, I was initiated into Transcendental Meditation. The practice of quieting my mind for a brief interval every day began a shift in me that continues to this day. It was a means of briefly disconnecting from the outside world while recognizing a new degree of present moment awareness and self-inquiry.
I continued to work in advertising, opening my own design business in 2001. Self-employment was no easier, but with meditation I was much better equipped to manage the stress. Over the years I began to recognize how meditation was transforming my life. I developed a regular Yoga practice. My relationships shifted from toxic to nurturing. My self-image shifted from highly-critical to self-loving. My ability to think creatively and solve problems was greatly improved. I learned how to say no and let go of unhealthy co-dependent behaviors. I found a healthy work/life balance. I finally quit drinking all together. All this came as a result of the self-awareness I had gained through my meditation practice. This is why I want to guide others. I hope to help others recognize comparable benefits.
I am currently writing a book on Introductory Mindfulness. Fingers crossed, it will be available by late 2023.
